BUSINESS AUTOMATION 101

Business automation refers to using technology to perform tasks that traditionally required human intervention. It began with simple machinery and has evolved into complex systems that can think and learn, known as intelligent automation. This evolution has drastically changed how businesses operate, making processes faster, cheaper, and more efficient.  This in turn improves profitability and the ability to scale.

Early Automation

Automation started with the Industrial Revolution (mid 1700’s to the mid 1800’s), where machines took over manual labor in factories. The introduction of assembly lines, powered by simple mechanical automation, allowed businesses to produce goods faster and at a lower cost. This was the first significant step towards reducing the reliance on human labor for repetitive tasks.

The Digital Revolution

After the advent of computers (mid 1900’s), business automation took a giant leap forward. Clerical tasks like data entry and record-keeping began to be automated which saved time and reduced errors. Software applications became the backbone of business processes, leading to increased productivity.

In the 2000s, Robotic Process Automation (RPA) emerged, allowing businesses to automate rule-based tasks across various applications. RPA bots could mimic human actions like clicking, typing, and copying data between systems. This freed up employees to focus on more complex and strategic work, improving overall efficiency.

Intelligent Automation

Today, intelligent automation combines RPA with artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). Unlike traditional automation, which follows predefined rules, intelligent automation can learn from data and make decisions. For example, AI can analyze customer data to predict buying behavior, while machine learning algorithms can optimize supply chains by predicting demand.

Essentially, automation such as AI and ML (encompassing Natural Language Processing) are all further evolutions of the Automation Maturity arc.

This cycle reflects the journey organizations typically undergo as they mature in their use of digital automation, from basic task automation to sophisticated, AI-driven systems that enhance operational efficiency and business outcomes.
